Scientist manufacture elements of sludge, doom, prog and black metal into something organic and original. The outcome is equal parts brutal and transcendental Following up on their previous full-length (which amidst other acclaim was included on a Metal Injection Top 10 Albums of 2015 list), Scientist are releasing their third album, Barbelith. According to the band, the new work is a concept album about "the search for life's meaning through the use of psychedelics and the occult, only to discover that you haven't even been born yet" and is "heavily influenced by the concepts revolving around Grant Morrison's comic book series the invisibles".

Album Review - Scientist - "Barbelith"

Filth covered guitars speed along as they twist their riffs up into a wonderfully strange mess, holding on to just enough disgusting crud. It’s the sort of thing that fits in with Mastodon’s first album “Remission”, an album that could’ve had an entire scene built around it, although you won’t find any direct influences from that album on “Barbelith”. With the high energy continually being delivered, there’s few slower passages with intense noisy introspection that allow for breaks from the savagery.

Drums are smashed into bits connecting with the guitars through hints of groove, stomping steady double-bass pulses, and even a rare blast beat here and there. Vocals play a large role with long, sustained, mid-ranged sandpaper screams being the mainstay with a huge variety of creative flourishes, from clear singing arising from the background and hints of black rasps and other tiny little secrets you’ll have to discover on your own.

While “Barbelith” nears an approximation of high speed sludge with convoluted riffs as our closest description, it’s apathetic to genres. What it does do is cultivate chaos into an experimental force!
Great! 9/10

Metal trenches review... 9/10

"The mark of a successful concept album, in my estimation, is its ability to fully immerse itself in its referenced ideology/philosophy/text while maintaining broad appeal to those who are not fully invested in the subject matter. It’s fairly rare that a band finds this delicate balance. Chicago’s Scientist have struck the golden mean with their masterful, sprawling, and enthralling third full-length record Barbelith. Inspired by Grant Morrison’s comic book series The Invisibles"

Angry metal guy review... 3.5/5

"There’s nothing self-indulgent about Barbelith: the band has delivered a forearm shiver to us, giving us a taste of what they’re capable of, and coming damned close to a 4 out of 5."

RTMB review... 7.5/10

Scientist is fucking Scientist, and BARBELITH lives up to the hype and then some, exhibiting the absolute pinnacle of musical quality seen thus far in 2018. Indy metal vault.

My music path review...
'Barbelith' reminded me of the day when I first heard 'Third Eye' from Tool, the afternoon when I put my burned CD of Mastodon's first album 'Remission' in my Discman, the night I secretly watched Rockzone on MTV and the video clip 'Them Bones' by Alice In Chains came on. All those memories are important because they have pushed me in a certain musical direction and Scientist has done that again. Year lists contender!

We sing like we want review...
Chicaco band Scientist are out with their third and self released full length titled "Barbelith" on Digital/CD(details to order below) and contains 7 banging tracks in the vein of old Mastodon but a little colder and heavier in the sound or Neurosis with great clean and screamed vocals and great production.Nice and varied songwriting experimenting with Progressive Metal,Sludge,Post Metal and tinges of Death Metal/Djent for one heck of an album full of hard dirges and atmpospheric parts, chunky riffs and layers of dissonant/shoe gazy guitar details, nice proggy tempo changes and pummeling awesome drumming.
Best post metal sludge prog album for 2018 so far for me!
BIg thumbs up!
